Linear RF Power Meter Circuit

The National Semiconductor LMV225 is a linear RF power meter IC in an SMD package. It can be used over the frequency range of 450 MHz to 2000 MHz and requires only four external components. The input coupling capacitor isolates the DC voltage of the IC from the input signal. The 10-k? resistor enables or disables the IC according to the DC voltage present at the input pin. If it is higher than 1.8 V, the detector is enabled and draws a current of around 5–8 mA. If the voltage on pin A1 is less than 0.8 V, the IC enters the shutdown mode and draws a current of only a few microampères. The LMV225 can be switched between the active and shutdown states using a logic-level signal if the signal is connected to the signal via the 10-kR resistor. Finally, there is an output capacitor that forms a...

Build a 65W Notebook Laptop Power Adapter

Using TOP269EG off-line switcher IC, (U1), in a flyback configuration can be designed a very simple high efficiency notebok laptop power adapter.TOP269EG IC has an integrated 725 V MOSFET and a multi-mode controller. It regulates the output by adjusting the MOSFET duty cycle, based on the current fed into its CONTROL pin. This laptop power adapter circuit will provide a fixed 19 volts output voltage at a maximum current of 3.5A. input voltage range is between 90 to 265VAC. Common-mode inductors L3 and L4 provide filtering on the AC input. X class capacitor C1 provides differential filtering, and resistors R1 and R2 provide safety from shock if the AC is removed, by ensuring a path for C1 to discharge. This is required by safety agencies when the capacitor value exceeds 100 nF. Bridge rectifier D1 rectifies the AC input, and bulk capacitor C2 filters the DC.

Power On Indicator Circuit Diagram

Power On Indicator Circuit diagram. Some types of electronic equipment do  not provide any indication that they are  actually on when they are switched on.  This situation can occur when the back-light of a display is switched off. In addition, the otherwise mandatory mains  power  indicator  is  not  required  with  equipment  that  consumes  less  than  10 watts. As a result, you can easily forget  to switch off such equipment. If you want  to know whether equipment is still drawing power from the mains, or if you want  to have an indication that the equipment  is switched on without having to modify the equipment, this circuit provides a solution.  One way to detect AC power current and  generate a reasonably constant voltage  independent of the load is to connect a  string of diodes wired in reverse parallel in series with one of the AC supply  leads. Here we sele...

Desktop Power Supply

Useful for electronics hobbyists, this linear workbench power supply converts a high input voltage (12V) from the SMPS of a PC into low output voltage (1.25 to 9 volts). An adjustable three-pin voltage regulator chip LM317T (IC1) is used here to provide the required voltages. The LM317T regulator, in TO-220 pack, can handle current of up to 1 amp in practice. Fig. 1 shows the circuit of the desktop power supply. Regulator IC LM317T is arranged in its standard application. Diode D1 guards against polarity reversal and capacitor C1 is an additional buffer. The green LED (LED1) indicates the status of the power input. Diode D2 prevents the output voltage from rising above the input voltage when a capacitive or inductive load is connected at the output. Similarly, capacitor C3 suppresses any residual ripple. Smart AC Automotive Power Strip

Women might say that they will never be able to have enough handbags and shoes (generally speaking), while men might never get enough of their power tools and hardware toys, and kids with their video games, but I am quite sure that something most of us will be able to agree on would be this – you can never have enough power outlets around, considering the rather large number of gadgets that we carry around with us these days. Smartphones, tablets, digital cameras, smart watches, the list goes on and on, and Thinkgeek intends to help you out with the $34.99 Smart AC Automotive Power Strip. The Smart AC Automotive Power Strip will be able to juice up just about all things, where this inverter plugs into your cigarette lighter socket. It will come with a couple of USB power ports and two AC outlets, and fret not about it melting down or catching fire, since the safety features which have been thrown into the mix include over-voltage, overload, short-circuit, high-temperature protection, a...

Single cell Power Supply

Many modern electronic devices and micro-controller based circuits need a 5 V or 3.3 V power  supply. It is important  that  these voltages are constant and so a regulator of some kind is essential, including in battery powered devices. The simplest approach is to select a (perhaps rechargeable) battery whose voltage is rather higher than that required by the circuit and use an ordinary  linear voltage regulator. Unfortunately this solution is rather wasteful of precious energy and space: for a 5 V circuit at least six NiCd or NiMH cells would be required. Both these disadvantages can be tackled using a little modern electronics. A good way to minimise energy losses is to use a switching regulator, and if we use a regulator with a step-up topology then we can simultaneously reduce the number of cells needed to power the circuit. Fortunately it is not too difficult to design a step-up converter suitable for use in portable equipment as the semi-conductor manufacturers...

9V Battery Replacement Power Supply Circuit Diagram

This circuit was originally designed to power a motorcycle intercom from the vehicle supply system. This type of intercom, which is used for communication between driver and passenger, generally requires quite a bit of power. In order to improve intelligibility there is often elaborate filtering and a compander is sometimes used as well. The disadvantage is that a battery doesn’t last very long. You could use rechargeable batteries, of course, but that is often rather laborious. It seems much more obvious to use the motorcycle power supply instead. A 9-V converter for such an application has to meet a few special requirements. 9V Battery Replacement Power Supply Circuit Diagram For one, it has to prevent interference from, for example, the ignition system reaching the attached circuit. It is also preferable that the entire circuit fits in the 9-V battery compartment. This circuit meets these requirements quite successfully and the design has nonetheless remained fairly simple. In the s...

Constructing your own Dual Power Supply Circuit

Many times the hobbyist desires to have a simple, dual power supply for a project. Existing power supplies may be large either in power output or physical size. a simple Dual Power Supply is necessary. For most non-critical applications the best & simplest choice for a voltage regulator is the 3-terminal type. The three terminals are input, ground & output. The 78xx & 79xx series can provide up to 1A load current & it have on chip circuitry to prevent damage in the event of over heating or excessive current. That is, the chip basically shuts down than blowing out. These regulators are cheap, simple to make use of, & they make it practical to design a method with plenty of P C Bs in which an unregulated supply is brought in & regulation is done locally on each circuit board. This Dual Power Supply project provides a dual power supply. With the appropriate choice of transformer & 3-terminal voltage regulator pairs you can basically build a tiny power supply deli...

Power and Energy

What is power? Power is the rate of using or supplying energy: Power =   Energy       Power is measured in watts (W) Energy is measured in joules (J) Time is measured in seconds (s)  Time Electronics is mostly concerned with small quantities of power, so the power is often measured in milliwatts (mW), 1mW = 0.001W. For example an LED uses about 40mW and a bleeper uses about 100mW, even a lamp such as a torch bulb only uses about 1W. The typical power used in mains electrical circuits is much larger, so this power may be measured in kilowatts (kW), 1kW = 1000W. For example a typical mains lamp uses 60W and a kettle uses about 3kW. Calculating power using current and voltage There are three ways of writing an equation for power, current and voltage: Power = Current × Voltage   so    P = I × V  or  I =   P  V  or  V =   P  I where: P = power in watts (W) V = vol...
